An efficient storage device has been man’s quest for a long time. He has been long in the pursuit of data storage devices which are efficient and cheap. Initially, data storage devices were huge and usually occupied large spaces. They required high maintenance and timely overhauling and hence huge expenditure was involved. Magnetic disks and tapes were the first of the storage devices that were incorporated in systems. This was because the magnetic tape on which the data was stored was very sensitive to light and required careful handling and maintenance.

The advent of Compact disks can be said to be a major breakthrough which was followed by the more efficient DVDs. Both can be used as temporary and permanent storage devices and hence became widely popular. DVDs are no doubt very efficient in storing data but have certain demerits. The DVD is durable but is not completely resistant to breakage. Though care must be exercised while handling them, lesser precautions are required if we were to consider their predecessors. This is the reason why we must backup dvds. Backup dvds are nothing but an extra copy of the stored data on another storage device. This storage device can be another dvd or even your hard disk.

Though dvds are highly popular and reliable to an extent, it is always suggested that you backup dvds so that you can be sure about your data. Dvds are not as sensitive as magnetic tapes but will get corrupted if handled roughly. A scratch or a crack on the surface will render it useless and the data cannot be accessed. A scratch on the dvd will make it unsuitable for viewing and hence you must always backup dvds which house important data.

Dvds are portable and come cheap when compared to the other storage devices. They come with more storage capability and are very easy to use. But since it is easy for the data to get corrupted, it is better that you backup dvds so that you are not in a fix when trying to retrieve the data.

Piracy is an international hazard that robs creative minds of the actual profits they are entitled to. Innovations in any field are the result of long hours of relentless efforts and extensive utilization of resources. The manufacturer of any product funds research thinking that his efforts will be getting the right recognition and value. It is highly frustrating to see your product being sold at a subsidized rate by someone else who is not authorized to do so.

Piracy is not restricted to the digital media. It is present everywhere and has the same effects as in the digital world. With the increase in popularity of portable storage devices piracy became widespread with disastrous results. With CD becoming the most preferred mode of data storage, the number of cases of piracy has increased. It starts at home when you select the option copy CD in your computer. The function copy CD may appear to be harmless as you will argue that the copy you are making is solely for your personal use. In fact, copy CD is one of the main reasons that the anti-piracy laws are more stringent than they used to be.

Due to the widespread use of copy CD, the entertainment industry has suffered huge losses. It prohibits pioneers from getting the true recognition and returns they are supposed to, since most of the revenue is being eaten up by middle men who are definitely not the brains behind the technology.

The true impact of piracy cannot be analyzed unless we take into consideration the huge numbers of pirated products that are released into the market. You may say that how will a single purchase cause a huge loss to the industry. A single copy does not affect much but if we consider the scores of copies that are released into the market the loss of revenue will be substantial.

Hence, as far as possible we must refrain from using pirated products as it hinders innovation and further development of mankind.

Man has always sought to better his resources so as to make his life more comfortable. He has used the concepts of science and technology to improvise his lifestyle and make it devoid of hardships. There has been a revolution in all aspects of life, one of them being entertainment. Initially, theatre and drama was the only means of entertainment and there was no concept of store and broadcast. As time went by, there came devices such as the television and the computer which were very successful in capturing the market.

Previously, the mode of entertainment was not mobile. It was not portable and there was no scope of storing data for future use. The present technology offers you several storage devices on which you can store data temporarily or permanently. The data can be audio, video or text that can be accessed later. DVDs are the widely used portable storage devices. It offers several advantages over its predecessors and is the most opted form of storage.

There are several issues concerning the sharing of data via DVDs. While the most easiest way to share data is to copy DVDs, the effects of making duplicate copies of DVDs is more grave than it appears to be. It is natural that you think why you cannot copy DVDs when you have one copy of the original. You can argue saying that you always copy DVDs for your personal use such as circulation among your relatives and friends. If you consider your case alone, this may seem harmless. But if everyone starts to copy DVDs and no one buys the original, the losses that the entertainment industry will incur are huge.

The entities who spend money in the making of the original movie or software, expect you to buy the original licensed copy as it is their only source of revenue. The income from DVDs is what drives innovation and research and hence encourages the creation of better products.

The next time you copy DVDs, stop for a moment and place yourself in the shoes of the manufacturer. This will help you realize the plight you will be putting him in and the losses he will be suffering.
