Video games can be defined as electronic or computer games that can be played either within the comforts of your home or in an arcade or gaming pub. These are usually played on a television, personal computer or on a portable handheld device. Some of the big names in the video game industry include PlayStation from Sony, Xbox from Microsoft and GameCube from Nintendo. These are large game consoles where the games can only be played on the manufacture’s hardware.
The history of video games dates back to 1947 when Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr. and Estle Ray Mann invented a ‘Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device’. Many such devices were invented in the later years but the commercial success of this industry is credited to Atari’s Pong which was bought out in the 1970s. Video gaming technology has come a long way since then with newer and more sophisticated models arriving in the market every year.
Earlier video games were an entertainment source only for children but today it is a source of delight and fun for the young and old alike. There are so many varieties of games that cater to all age groups. It provides a route of escape after a day’s hard work and stresses. Development of these games involves computer programmers and graphic designers along with a team of sound engineers, animation experts and musicians.
As much as its popularity, video games have become a source for controversial debate among child psychologists, teachers and parents. Many believe that the violent themes and characters present in most games have negative effects on these young minds. Research studies have shown that children exposed to games with violent and sexual content have become more aggressive and unruly indulging in frequent fighting episodes with siblings and friends. Thus, owing to public pressure, the Entertainment Software Rating Board started its own rating system of all video games based on its content. The games are assigned according to the age groups which help parents choose the right ones for their children.
Video games are an excellent medium of fun, frolic and enjoyment for all, especially children. With the increasing advent of technology, these electronic consoles have become much more sophisticated than earlier. But make sure you choose the right games for your children depending on their age as many of them contain explicit content which may prove harmful for your child’s psyche.
