A Disk to disk backup software set with a web based frontend application is known as ‘Backup PC’. Backup PC is most recognized as an open source back up software. The Backup PC is an enterprise grade system used for backing up operating systems like Linux, Window, and Mac PCs and laptops to a servers’ disk. To create a back up for large number of PCs to a server’s local disk or a particular network storage space can be considered as one of the most practical and cost efficient ways. Backup PC can be easily installed and maintained, and configured on to a PC or laptop.
The Backup PC was developed by Craig Barratt in November 2007, and it was released in April 2009. It was developed in the Computer language ‘Perl’ and works on cross- platform operating systems.
Few interesting features of the Backup PC software are – Backup PC enables to store identical files only once thus saving the disk storage space and disk I/O. It has a very smart pooling scheme that reduces disk storage by not creating multiple back ups of the same file. The availability of optional compression support helps in deducting the disk storage space to a further extent as only the new files are compressed and builds a great impact on the CPU time. An interesting feature of Backup PC is that it doest not require any client side software to operate. The Backup PC also has a complete set of restore options that allows direct restore or restore while downloading a zip or tar file. A very important and unique feature of the Backup PC is that an email notification is sent to the user if their PC has not been recently backed up by the software. These email reminders are sent at regular intervals to alert the users.
